Incorporated in 2013, Ike & Tina Domestic Violence Initiative has been a leader in the field by consistently providing progressive services to survivors of domestic violence for over eight years. Staffed by a team of multicultural staff, volunteers, interns. We are a 501(c) 3 designated non-profit organization.

Why Us?

OUR MISSION & VISION

Ike & Tina Domestic Violence Initiative is dedicated to eliminating domestic violence In the Atlanta community by providing comprehensive support services and safe temporary shelter to victims of domestic violence; particularly to abused women and their children; engaging in advocacy to promote future system change and encouraging prevention through community education. Our services are free of charge to all victims of domestic violence. Regardless of age, sex, race, creed, marital status and socioeconomic status.

SENATE INQUIRY CALL FOR NEW LAWS

Legal reform on a federal level to ensure victims of domestic violence support, that legal steps of protection will protect them from their abuser, because the legal protocol implemented through the departments of the law are completely inadequate.

Reform in areas of how to better utilize funds given to domestic violence administrators for domestic violence victims residing in the shelters throughout the state of Georgia.

Put in place a more interactive support network between victims, survivors to ensure that they can be better informed of resources available to them.

Changes concerning how domestic violence shelters are ran and directed to ensure that victims are given access to and encouraged to use all the resources that are available to them.

Set in motion the agenda outlined in “Law of Georgia #3143” on Elimination of Domestic Violence, Protection, and Support of victims of Domestic Violence.

Stiffer laws, no bail for the arrest of perpetrators physically beating, bruising, murdering victims.

Pressing criminal charges against abusers should be mandatory upon the arrest of the abuser for the brutal physical evidence at the scene for a victim of domestic violence.

Perpetrators should be charged immediately, remain in jail with no bond until sentenced to prison.

Extra layers of Cybersecurity for domestic violence victims.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES

At I.T.D.V.I. we work tirelessly to empower victims of domestic violence. We provide them with the tools they need to escape a dangerous situation and to move towards safety and self-sufficiency. I.T.D.V.I. provides a wide range of services to help our clients accomplish this. We provide direct assistance.

We offer a variety of programs designed to help children who have been exposed to domestic violence. Our children’s services include behavior assessment, art and play therapy, puppetry, and relationship building.

TYPES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE When the general public thinks about domestic violence, they usually think in terms of physical assault that results in visible injuries to the victim. This is only one type of abuse. There are several categories of abusive behavior, each of which has its own devastating consequences.

Control- Controlling behavior is a way for the abuser to maintain dominance over the victim. Physical Abuse-Hitting, kicking, biting, spitting, pushing, slapping, choking, pulling hair, burning, shooting, scratching, beating, threatening with a weapon, hitting with an object, drowning, threatening to injure children, pets, family members.

Sexual Abuse-Unwanted penetration by the victim, drugging the victim, laughing or making fun of another’s sexuality or body, making offensive statements, name calling, punching, hitting, forcing oral, anal sex.

Emotional Abuse & Intimidation-Exploitation of the victim’s vulnerability, insecurity, or character. Continuous degradation, intimidation, manipulation, brainwashing, insulting, criticizing to undermine the victim’s self -confidence.

Isolation-Controlling behaviors, keeping the victim from seeing who they want to see, doing what they want to do, setting and meeting goals, control how the victim thinks and feels, keeping the victim from contact with the world, family, friends, that are against the abuse and perpetrator.

Verbal Abuse: Coercion, Threats, & Blame-Abusive language used to denigrate, embarrass, or threaten the victim. Threatening to kill the victim, children, family members, pets, property, reputation, name calling (ugly bitch’ whore’ or stupid’) telling the victim they’re unattractive or undesirable. Yelling, screaming, rampaging, terrorizing, refusing to talk.

Using Male Privilege-As long as a culture accept the principle and privilege of male dominance, men will continue to be abusive. Economic & Financial Abuse-Controlling the family income, and either not allowing the victim access to money.

Stockholm Syndrome describes a powerful and loving connection people who are oppressed develop for their abuser, oppressor. Another manifestation of trauma bonding. The victim becomes incapable of leaving their perpetrator or viewing them as not the hostile aggressors they truly are.

Narcissistic personality disorder- Narcissists don’t really love themselves. Actually they are driven by shame. It’s the idealized image of themselves, which they embody, that they admire. But deep down, narcissist feel the gap between the façade they show the world and their shame-based self. They work hard to avoid feeling that shame. To fill this gap narcissist use destructive defense mechanisms that destroy relationships and cause pain and damage to their loved ones. Domestic Violence can happen to anyone, It can happen to the people you might least expect.

Whether you young or old; rich or poor, you can find yourself in a relationship with somebody who mistreats you in a multitude of ways. As we know, not even celebrities- with all the apparent opportunity in the world are above domestic violence. 12 famous survivors bravely spoke about their own experiences: Tina Turner, Candi Staton, Rihanna Fenty,
